Black History Month: Bessie Coleman
by Eugene Armstead on Feb.20, 2010, under Black History Month Project, Fox 21, Work Stuff
Bessie Coleman, or “Queen Bess” as she was popularly known, was the tenth of thirteen children born to sharecroppers George and Susan Coleman.
As a child, she vowed to one day “amount to something.” And amount to something she did, as she, through hard work and overwhelming obstacles, became the first person of African American decent to become a licensed airplane pilot… and the first American of any race or gender to hold an international pilot license!
